How brakes wear, in plain terms

Every stop turns motion into heat through friction. Some parts are built to wear away so the rest of the system doesn't.

Why pads and rotors are called wear items

Like the soles of your shoes, they're made to wear down with use. How long they last depends on how and where you drive.

Brake pads
Friction material that presses against the rotor every time you stop. It wears thinner with each stop, and many pads have a small metal tab that squeals when they get low.
Rotors
The metal discs the pads squeeze. They wear thinner over time and can wear unevenly, which you feel as a pulse in the pedal or a shake in the steering wheel.
Calipers
The clamps that push the pads against the rotors. A caliper that sticks can make the car pull, wear pads unevenly, or cause a burning smell.
Brake fluid
Carries the force of your foot to the wheels. Over time it absorbs moisture, which can make the pedal feel softer and let parts corrode from the inside.
Hoses and lines
Carry the fluid to each wheel. Rubber hoses age and crack, and a leak anywhere in the system can make the pedal soft or sink.

Brake questions

Don't see yours? Call (714) 984-0948.

How do I know my brakes need attention?

The most common signs are a high squeal, grinding, a shake or pulse when you brake, a pedal that feels soft, the car pulling to one side, or a brake warning light. If your car stops differently than it used to, it's worth a look.

Is it safe to keep driving with squeaky brakes?

A squeal is often an early warning that the pads are getting low, so you usually have some time, but not unlimited time. If the squeal turns into grinding, come in right away. An inspection tells you exactly where you stand.

Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?

The usual cause is rotors that have worn unevenly, so the pads grab and release as the rotor turns. Worn suspension or wheel parts can cause it too. We will inspect it and show you what we find.

Do I always need new rotors with new pads?

Not always. It depends on the rotors' thickness and condition. Your inspection shows whether they can stay or need replacing, and we'll show you why.

How long does a brake job take?

It depends on your vehicle and what it needs. We aim for same-day service whenever possible, and we will tell you what to expect before we start.

Do I need an appointment?

Walk-ins are welcome. Appointments are recommended for faster service, and you can book online any time, day or night.

Is brake work covered by your warranty?

Ask about our 3-year, 36,000-mile nationwide parts and labor warranty on qualified repairs. We're happy to walk you through the details. We make it easy to do business with us. Ask us which parts of your repair qualify.

What vehicles do you work on?

We service most domestic, Asian, and European vehicles, and we work on business fleets too. Call with your year, make, and model and we will confirm.

Can I get a ride while my car is in the shop?

Yes. Ask about our free local shuttle when you book or check in.
